Kiama Wisdom
Tooth Extractions

Wisdom teeth (“third molars”) are the last set of teeth to erupt and some of the most common to need to be extracted. Although wisdom tooth removal isn’t a right of passage into adulthood, these molars frequently affect the oral health of teens and young adults.

When do Wisdom
Teeth Come In?

Well before adolescence, wisdom teeth are already developing further back in the jaw. For most people, they’ll start to come in sometime during the late teen years. Others may not notice them until they’re in university. On average, wisdom teeth typically finish growing by the time a person is around 30 years old.

Why are Wisdom
Teeth Extracted?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. They’re usually only extracted if they are:

• Compromising the health of other teeth
• Causing pain, with no gradual improvement
• Changing the alignment of your smile
• Partially erupted
• Actively infected by periodontal disease or tooth decay

Because of their location at the back of your mouth, wisdom teeth are at a drastically higher rate of developing cavities, gum disease, or damaging the structures around them.

If you previously wore braces, you may want to consider how the pressure from your wisdom teeth can lead to new issues with crowding and rotated teeth. Their pressure at the back of your jaw can lead to tooth movement throughout your entire smile.

Symptoms of
Impacted Wisdom
Teeth

You might have fully or partially-impacted wisdom teeth if you’ve noticed swelling, a bad taste in your mouth, pain that comes and goes, or food getting caught around them. Our Kiama dentist will take a special panoramic X-ray to determine the location, size, and position of each of your wisdom teeth before a care plan is prescribed.

Keeping You
Comfortable

Having your wisdom teeth extracted can range from a standard procedure to more of an involved oral surgery. At Collins Street Dental, our Kiama dentists are highly concerned with your comfort and recovery following the visit. We invite you to discuss the procedure and anti-anxiety options further in depth with our family dentists at the time of your consultation.
